Charlie Ventura was named "Best Tenor Sax" by the readers of Downbeat in 1945. He worked with Gene Krupa, Jack Teagarden, and a number of jazz greats. He died in 1992 in Pleasantville, New Jersey. This promo photo from the 1940's is signed by Mr Ventura himself.
The "Ancient and Honorable Order of Turtles" was created in WWII as an informal drinking club among pilots. They described themselves as being "an honorable drinking fraternity composed of ladies and gentlemen of the highest morals and good character, who are never vulgar." Having known a few military pilots, including one who crashed a helicopter I was in, they are mostly not vulgar, unless they are crashing a helicopter into some trees; then they know every swear word in the book. To get into this club you need to answer a volley of questions remembering that vulgarity and dishonor have no place in your answers. If you have a diabetic donkey then this club is for you!!!
